How Domestic Abuse Leads to Homelessness
Domestic abuse is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women in the UK. When someone flees an abusive relationship — or is forced to leave their home — they often have nowhere to go. In many cases, the family home may be in the abuser’s name, or leaving may mean abandoning everything they own. The connection between domestic abuse and homelessness is profound and often underacknowledged.
The Scale of the Problem
Research consistently shows that a significant proportion of women accessing homeless services have a history of domestic abuse. In Brighton, as in other cities, domestic abuse is a major pathway into homelessness. Survivors may have fled with only the clothes on their backs, leaving behind jobs, belongings, support networks, and — most painfully — sometimes even their children.
Barriers Facing Survivors
Survivors of domestic abuse face unique and significant barriers when they leave an abusive relationship. Fear is a primary concern — fear of the abuser finding them, fear of not being believed, and fear of an uncertain future. Financial dependency is common, as abusers frequently exercise control over finances, leaving survivors without money, credit history, or savings. Children can complicate housing applications, as survivors need to find somewhere safe for their whole family.
Support Available in Brighton
Brighton has several specialist services for survivors of domestic abuse. RISE is the main domestic abuse organisation in Brighton and Hove, providing a helpline, refuge spaces, and ongoing support. The council’s Housing Options team has a duty to assist those who are homeless as a result of domestic abuse. Seaside CIC works alongside specialist domestic abuse services to ensure survivors have access to holistic support.
