Peer Support in Homelessness Recovery: Why It Works

What Is Peer Support?

Peer support is a model of help and recovery where people with lived experience of a particular challenge — in this case, homelessness — provide support, guidance, and mentorship to others going through similar experiences. It is based on the principle that people who have been through something themselves have a unique credibility and understanding that professionals without that experience cannot fully replicate.

Why Peer Support Works for Homelessness

The experience of homelessness can be profoundly isolating and dehumanising. When someone is in crisis, being met by a professional who has never experienced homelessness can feel distant and difficult to relate to. A peer — someone who has been on the streets, stayed in a hostel, dealt with the benefits system, and come out the other side — can offer something qualitatively different. They provide genuine hope that recovery is possible, practical knowledge of how to navigate the system, and a relationship built on mutual understanding and respect.

Evidence for Peer Support

Research on peer support in homelessness recovery consistently shows positive outcomes. Peer support is associated with increased engagement with services, reduced substance misuse, improved mental health, and better housing outcomes. People who engage with peer support are more likely to maintain their accommodation and less likely to return to rough sleeping. It is a cost-effective intervention that complements professional services rather than replacing them.
