Brighton is rightly celebrated as one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cities in the world. But despite its inclusive reputation, LGBTQ+ people in Brighton — and across the UK — face a disproportionate risk of homelessness. At Seaside CIC, we are committed to providing inclusive, affirming support for all people experiencing homelessness, including LGBTQ+ individuals.
Why Are LGBTQ+ People at Higher Risk of Homelessness?
Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ people — particularly young people — are over-represented in the homeless population. The most common reason is family rejection following disclosure of sexual orientation or gender identity. Young people who are “outed” to parents or carers who are not accepting may find themselves asked to leave the family home, sometimes with little or no warning.
Trans People and Homelessness
Trans people face particular challenges around homelessness. Many hostels and shelters are gender-segregated and may not appropriately accommodate trans residents. Trans people may also face discrimination and harassment in mixed accommodation, making them reluctant to seek help. The lack of trans-inclusive services is a significant gap in the homelessness support system.
LGBTQ+ Homelessness in Brighton
Brighton attracts many LGBTQ+ people from across the UK who feel they cannot be themselves in their home communities. Some arrive with very little — no housing, no income, and no local support network. The pressure on LGBTQ+-inclusive services in Brighton is significant.
