Brighton and Hove is well known as one of the most vibrant, diverse, and welcoming cities in England. But it is also known for having one of the highest rates of homelessness and rough sleeping outside London. Understanding why Brighton has such a significant homelessness problem is essential to finding lasting solutions. Seaside CIC has been working on the frontline of Brighton’s homelessness crisis for years.
High Housing Costs
Brighton is one of the most expensive cities to rent in England outside London. High demand from students, young professionals, and people relocating from London has driven up rents significantly. For people on low incomes — including those receiving housing benefit — finding an affordable home in Brighton is extremely difficult, and many end up homeless as a result.
Reputation as a Tolerant, Welcoming City
Brighton’s reputation as an open, tolerant, and welcoming city means that it attracts people from across the country who are marginalised or excluded elsewhere. LGBTQ+ people, people with complex needs, and others who have found it difficult to find acceptance in their home communities may come to Brighton hoping for a fresh start — but without the housing or income to sustain themselves.
Well-Developed Support Services
Paradoxically, Brighton’s well-developed network of homelessness support services also contributes to its visible homelessness problem. People experiencing homelessness travel to Brighton precisely because there are services available — but the demand for those services consistently outstrips supply.
What Is Being Done?
Brighton and Hove City Council and organisations like Seaside CIC are working to address homelessness through a combination of prevention, outreach, supported accommodation, and move-on housing. Progress is being made — but the scale of the challenge means there is still much work to do. Seaside CIC is committed to being part of the solution.
