Charities and social enterprises play an absolutely vital role in addressing homelessness in the UK. While central and local government have statutory duties toward homeless people, it is often third sector organisations — charities, community interest companies, and social enterprises — that deliver the frontline services that make the most difference to people’s lives. Seaside CIC is proud to be one of these organisations, serving Brighton and the surrounding area.
What Do Homelessness Charities Do?
Homelessness charities provide a wide range of services, including: outreach work to find and support people sleeping rough; emergency shelters and night shelters; supported accommodation with on-site staff; day centres providing food, showers, and advice; housing and legal advice; mental health and substance misuse support; employment and training programmes; and advocacy and campaigning work to change policy.
Why Are Charities So Important?
Charities are often able to work in ways that statutory services cannot. They can take a more flexible, person-centred approach; they can work with people who have multiple exclusions from mainstream services; they can build trust with the most marginalised individuals over time; and they can advocate publicly for changes that government bodies cannot.
How You Can Support Homelessness Charities
You can support the work of homelessness charities by donating money, volunteering your time, donating goods, fundraising, or simply raising awareness of the issue. Every contribution — however small — makes a real difference to real people’s lives.
At Seaside CIC, we are grateful for every person who supports our work in Brighton. If you would like to get involved, please visit our website or contact us directly.
